The CSA has been wound up at last. Their record is terrible - over a billion spent on inadequate computer and phone systems (fat private contractor walks away chuckling, pats pockets and lights cigar with £50 note . . .), 86% of cases have errors, complaint handling taking 8 months, 3 billion in uncollected revenue and £3 costs for every £2 collected.

It's expensive, inadequate, fails to deliver on what it was supposed to and has caused misery in those it was supposed to be heping. John Hutton declares it "unfit for its purpose."

A shame then, that the same criteria isn't applied to Labour in general.

Sion Jenkins is released after jurors fail to reach a verdict. 9 years and 10 million later, we still don't know who beat his stepdaughter to death in the family garden, although Sion is claiming that he was unfairly targetted by police. Let's see . . . a man who lied about his job qualifications, was violent to a former wife, had inconsistencies in his story on the day of the murder and was covered in his step-daughter's blood. Whatever were they thinking? Quite apart from the fact that statistically, a non-blood relative of the older opposite sex is statistically highly likely to be the murderer.

A teenager with a brain tumour is overdosed with radiation 17 times at a cancer treatment centre in Scotland. The staff are said to be "mortified", although not perhaps as literally as their patient will probably be after being overdosed. Even though her brain tumour is now gone, her specialists can't say whether she will survive from the treatment.

Metro has the usual list of appalling sex crimes - a man who was let out of jail after 29 years for raping three girls went on to rape and murder a 20 year-old before setting himself alight, a man is jailed for 14 years after kidnapping and gang-raping two Lituanians whom he wanted to traffick to Saudi Arabia as sex slaves (anyone care to guess whether he's a re-offender, by any chance?) and one of the gang who kidnapped two teenagers, raped them and murdered one admits to stabbing the girl.

He denies rape, like we believe that for a second. Meanwhile, a 6 month old in Birmingham who disappeared from his house is found dead near a stream and an 11 year old girl has just gone missing.

I don't get it. Jack the Ripper hated women but even he didn't rape anyone. I think we've finally reached the moment in Moore's From Hell when his Ripper protagonist catches sight of the modern era and is thoroughly frightened and appalled by it.
