A new approach to fare dodgers

Seems that a number of plain clothes police officers have just chased a suspect onto a Tube at Stockwell and shot him dead.

According to witness Mark Whitby on BBC:

"I was sitting on the train reading my paper.

"I heard a load of noise, people saying, 'Get out, get down'!

"I saw an Asian guy run onto the train hotly pursued by three plain-clothes police officers.

"One of them was carrying a black handgun - it looked like an automatic - they pushed him to the floor, bundled on top of him and unloaded five shots into him.

"I saw the gun being fired five times into the guy - he's dead."

Fairly unequivocal. I'd be interested if they are rolling out the same treatment for Charity Muggers.

I'm reminded of Conrad's "The Secret Agent". There's a character called the Professor, who makes bombs. He carries around a suicide device with him, ensuring that the police are too afraid to bring him in, as the person that tries is going to get blown up.

An anarchist asks him if he isn't afraid that he'll just be sniped by a rifle, and the Professor replies that nothing would please him more to be gunned down like a dog by the authorities, as this would futher his anarchist agenda just as much as detonating his devices.

It strikes me that despite world wars, cold wars and dirty wars, we've been blissfully ignorant of waht security people have been prepared to do on our behalf to preserve our "English" way of life. It may be now that we're having to wake up to some cold facts and having to alter our outlook slightly.

Then again, I for one am not going to be ready to bludgeon suspicious tube travellers (well, no more than usual when they don't let you get off the bloody train). Some militants are trying to alter my behaviour via intimidation, and I simply can't stand a bully.
